  10. SerTest is a small application designed to check out 3 things essential to
  11. successful modem usage:
  12.  
  13.  1. The computer's serial port
  14.  2. The computer-modem cable
  15.  3. The modem
  16.  
  17. To this end, it assumes a Hayes compatible modem (all are nowadays), and
  18. will advise on badly wired cables and the maximum DTE rate that the modem
  19. supports.
  20.  
  21. If you have the correct cable, a working modem, but still get no luck with
  22. this program, you may have a blown serial port. Early A5000's tended to blow
  23. their serial driver chip (usually marked 'Sipex SP241' near the serial
  24. connector). Acorn dealers with surface mount gear can replace this if that is
  25. the case (eg: Atomwide - 01689 814500).

  27. Remember, the A3000 doesn't actually *have* a serial port unless you bought
  28. the serial port upgrade kit!
  29.  
  30. For those who have to make up cables, if the program advises you that you need
  31. an Acorn-wired cable, this is the wiring:
