SerTest is a small application designed to check out 3 things essential to
successful modem usage:
1. The computer's serial port
2. The computer-modem cable
3. The modem
To this end, it assumes a Hayes compatible modem (all are nowadays), and
will advise on badly wired cables and the maximum DTE rate that the modem
supports.
If you have the correct cable, a working modem, but still get no luck with
this program, you may have a blown serial port. Early A5000's tended to blow
their serial driver chip (usually marked 'Sipex SP241' near the serial
connector). Acorn dealers with surface mount gear can replace this if that is
the case (eg: Atomwide - 01689 814500).
Remember, the A3000 doesn't actually *have* a serial port unless you bought
the serial port upgrade kit!
For those who have to make up cables, if the program advises you that you need
an Acorn-wired cable, this is the wiring:
Acorn 9w female Modem 25w male
--------------- --------------
1-4-8 20
2 3
3 2
5 7
6 5
7 4
9 8
And the PC wiring is this:
Acorn 9w female Modem 25w male
--------------- --------------
1 8
2 3
3 2
4 20
5 7
6 6 (rarely used - omit if necessary)
7 4
8 5
9 22 (rarely used - omit if necessary)
